Program Description:
Learn how to completely design and build two stools in this five-day class. Learn how to blend artistic form and functionality. This class was inspired by the innovative designs of Wharton Esherick, a pioneering figure in the American studio furniture movement.
This class will begin with students working through the design process, and then dive into the hands-on experience, where you will actively engage in sculpting the legs with precision and symmetry. Carving stretchers will follow, enhancing the stool's structural stability and aesthetic appeal.
The heart of this course lies in sculpting the stool seats. Gaining inspiration from Wharton Esherick's organic forms, students will carve two unique seat shapes, each resonating with your own individual creativity. Every step, from wood selection to the final finish, will be covered meticulously. The course not only emphasizes the technicalities but also instills a deeper appreciation for the art and history of studio furniture. With a maximum of 6 students, you'll receive personalized instruction in a fully equipped woodworking college with state-of-the-art workbenches.
